Someone drove a pickup truck through the glass entrance of the Tarrant County sub-Courthouse in Arlington on Christmas Eve.

Authorities said the driver was targeting an ATM inside the building but left empty-handed.

"When you're that desperate for money, you'll try anything," Tarrant County Sheriff's Office spokesman Terry Grisham said.

"They got away with breaking a lot of glass and making a great big mess, but the ATM matching was well-anchored," Grisham said.

Arlington police, which are investigating along with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office, later recovered the truck .

It is not clear how many people were involved in the attempted burglary.

"It was extremely brazen and, coming on the morning of Christmas Eve, they proved there are still grinches out there and they tried to spoil Christmas for somebody," Grisham said.

However, Grisham also said the crime was brazen but not original.

"That M.O. has been something we've seen before -- where someone drives a vehicle through a glass façade and attempts to steal an ATM machine -- and, in the past, it has been successful," he said.

Earlier this year, a vehicle drove through a sub-Courthouse on Grandbury Road in Fort Worth. In that incident, an ATM was stolen.

The sheriff's office is looking into the possible connection between the two incidents.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 817-469-TIPS (8477) or Arlington police at 817-459-5600.

Hundreds of loved ones and co-workers remembered an Irving police officer who died Sunday.

Funeral services for Officer Corey Lee Cooksey were held at Calvary Church on Friday.

Cooksey died Sunday at the Baylor Medical Center in Grapevine a few days after he was admitted with low blood pressure. His cause of death is unknown.

"I would say 90 percent of the people he wrote tickets to thanked him for the ticket, and it was just one of those things we laughed about," close friend Officer Charles Van Deren said. "It's like, I would get the exact opposite reaction, but with Corey it would be, 'Thank you for the three tickets you wrote me officer. I'll try to be careful in the future.'"

Cooksey joined the Irving Police Department in February 1999. He most recently served as a motor officer with the Special Operations Division.

He is survived by his wife and 9-year-old son.

His family requested that donations be made to the "Corey Cooksey Memorial Fund" at the Irving City Employees Federal Credit Union in lieu of flowers.

A 18-year-old college sophomore has been named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the energy field for the second year in a row.

"It made me realize that I'm doing something big, and that I can have a big impact with my research," Param Jaggi said.

The Vanderbilt University student and Plano East graduate has also been featured in Popular Science magazine and has won a national award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for an algae-filled contraption he invented that fits over a car's tailpipe and is designed to turn carbon dioxide emissions into oxygen.

Since then, Jaggi has founded his own company, EcoViate.

He's also started work on a thermovoltaic wind system, another renewable energy product. It is meant to turn energy waste into new energy.

The recognition is a major validation of years of hard work, he said.

"If you think about it, you only know a handful of inventors from history, but you can list off hundreds of celebrities and hundreds of athletes," he said. "It gives a reason to what I'm doing."

Jaggi's father, Pawam, said it's difficult to express how proud he and his wife are of their son.

Even as a child, his son was always captivated by taking things apart and learning how they worked, he said.

"I've seen him at four o'clock in the morning reading," Pawam Jaggi said. "I didn't do that when I was 18 years old. I'm excited about the potential he has to change the world."

But Param Jaggi is more modest, saying he hopes maybe to make a "marginal impact."

"It's something that I love doing, and I don't even realize that I'm doing it. ... You have to be crazy to change the world," he said.

Jaggi currently holds a patent for his algae-based invention.

No-Refusal Weekend Spurs Liquor Sales

Liquor stores across North Texas may owe their local police departments a round of drinks or, at the very least, a thank you.

Alcohol sales normally skyrocket in the days before folks toast the New Year. But sales this year may spike even higher because so many police departments are conducting no-refusal weekends.

During no-refusal periods, special patrols are out on interstates and major streets. The task forces include judges that can immediately authorize the suspension of licenses and force blood testing on drivers who refuse sobriety testing.

Liquor store managers say fear of the patrols is part of what is driving sales.

Managers at Specs in Dallas said 50 percent of their customers are purchasing alcohol for parties they're planning to have at home. Many are professional people who want to toast in the New Year with a few drinks without the risk of an encounter with a no-refusal patrol, they said.

Liquor stores will not have any special hours but expect crowds through closing on Saturday. They also expect sales to pick up again Monday because of last-minute shoppers.

Frisco ISD Closes Tax Building Over Conn. Shooting

The Frisco school district tax building is closed for the winter break -- but not for reasons most parents are used to hearing.

A note taped to the building tells parents: "Due to the recent events in Connecticut, the FISD administration is requiring us to keep this building locked during the winter break."

In a statement sent late Friday night, Frisco Independent School District spokesman Jamie Driskill said the district decided to keep the building locked during the winter break when the building was not fully occupied because of "security concerns heightened by recent events."

The note on the building tells parents they can drop their payment in a drop box and apologized for the inconvenience.

Driskill said payments are collected daily. Payments are noted as being paid that day, and receipts are then mailed, he said.

The building's note caught Sunil Malik by surprise. The parent was coming to pay his taxes and get a receipt. He said he didn't understand why the building, which is near a middle school but not connected to the classrooms, was closed.

"It says it's a security concern, but the shootings were related to the kids, and it's not a school," he said.

Rejesh Chauhan, another parent, drove up to the building to pay his taxes. He read the sign and thought the note perhaps was a show of compassion for the recent tragedy in Connecticut. But he said he wasn't too pleased about having to drop his check into a drop box.

"If they put this note, I wish they would send a little sweet letter at home telling the exact reason, right?" he said.

Driskill said the district agreed that the note on the building was confusing, saying that a better solution would be determined in the future and communicated better.

The office will be open during its regular hours next week Wednesday through Friday and until noon on Monday, he said.

Investigators are trying to find the person who torched several classic cars at a business in Forney on Christmas Day.

Gerald Gauthier, owner of the Mustang Shop, said a friend called on Christmas morning to tell him that several cars parked outside his lot were on fire.

"He said, 'Your business, it looks like a war zone,'" he said.

Gauthier arrived to find three classic Mustangs gutted and several more with smashed windows.

"The first thing he did is, he went to destroy glass on all the vehicles," he said.

The vandal was caught on surveillance cameras installed outside Gauthier's business.

In the video, the person can be seen walking up to the vehicles, smashing the windows and then lighting something on fire. Shortly afterward, several of the vehicles can be seen erupting into flames.

"They're gone; they're completely gone. The '69 is somewhat salvageable, but these two here, they're just plain gone," said Gauthier while pointing to two classic Mustangs that were scorched and gutted by flames.

Gauthier said it has taken years to build up his business. What happened will set him back thousands of dollars, he said.

"I think someone that does this wouldn't hesitate to do it again to someone else," he said.

Now he just wants the person caught before he strikes again.

"I think somebody doesn't have any Christmas spirit," he said. "I don't have any words for it. I couldn't really even explain it."

Members of a Mesquite church are still recovering after their sanctuary went up in flames less than a week before Christmas.

But the Eastridge Park Congregational Methodist Church is not letting the fire get in the way of Sunday and Christmas services. Church members say their faith is fireproof.

"This is a building," said Lisa Jackson, a longtime church member. "It's not our spirit; this is not God. It's our church, our church. It just killed our soul, and then it's like we will rise from the ashes."

The community has stepped up, helping the church pick up where it left off. An events venue next door is allowing the congregation to use its chapel until the church can be rebuilt.

"There were more blessings that were coming out of it from the community and surrounding friends that kind of out-shadowed the despair for us," pastor Mark Mills said.

No one was injured, but the fire has drawn them closer to one another, he said.

"We would not be defeated," Jackson said. "We would still march forward for what we believe in and use this as an opportunity to grow."

Church services on Sunday will go on as planned at Palais Royale events venue in Mesquite at 11 a.m.

A 16-year-old boy was hit by a car after getting off of a school bus Friday afternoon, officials say.

The student, a freshman at Shepton High School, was transported to the hospital but is expected to recover.

Plano police said the bus stopped on Windhaven Parkway east of Midway Road to let some students who live in the neighborhood off the bus. The injured student got off the bus and walked in front of it to cross Windhaven Parkway.

The driver of a black Lexus apparently didn't see the bus's stop sign and flashing lights. The car hit the boy, sending him flying over the front of the car and smashing the windshield.

In order for the school bus to open its doors to let students out, the stop sign on the side of the bus must be extended and the red flashing lights must be on.

Once the investigation is complete, police will determine if any charges will be filed.

The Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau is taking action after being inspired by NBC's Ann Curry.

This week Curry sent out a tweet motivating those throughout the country to provide random acts of kindness on behalf of the 26 victims of the massacre in Connecticut.

The Irving CVB staff has been planning out the most meaningful ways to pay tribute to all of the shooting victims in Connecticut.

"We are trying to take the characters of students and match them up with some kind act that we can do," said Diana Pfaff, director of communications at the Irving CVB.

The organization is spending roughly $500 to perform 26 random acts of kindness throughout the city. To do so, they have partnered with local businesses to accomplish their mission.

Marlen Torreblanca got her cat food paid for at PETCO in honor of 6-year-old animal lover Catherine Hubbard.

"I'm sad that she is not here and I'm grateful that y'all are doing this for her," said Torreblanca.

As the random acts continued throughout the day, Pfaff said she's grateful to Ann Curry for motivating her to do something positive for her community.

"Her philosophy is, when you do something good, you feel good. And I think a lot of us have felt not very good because of what has happened up there. Even though it's half a country away, we're still affected here in Irving, Texas," she said.

Pfaff said the Irving CVB's 26th act of kindness will be to send a special delivery to Curry, thanking her for inspiring them. That act will be in honor of 27-year-old Vicki Soto, who was an inspiration to all of her students.

Veteran Receives Mortgage-Free House

advertisement

A military family from Georgia was welcomed to North Texas on Friday morning with keys to a new house in Arlington.

U.S. Army Sgt. Tobias Green was wounded during a tour in Iraq and received the Purple Heart.

The mortgage-free house was made possible by veteran support group Military Warriors Support Foundation and Bank of America, which owned the house through a previous foreclosure.

"[When] we actually opened the doors, I almost had to pinch myself," Green said. "It just lets you know how many people support the troops."

The Military Warriors Support Foundation has given away more than 250 homes to veterans. Bank of America plans to donate 1,000 homes throughout the country.

Green's wife, Natasha, also a veteran, said she urged her husband to apply to the program once she learned about the program.

"He submitted his story of what happened to him, not thinking that we would get picked to get a home and, in the end, we ended up getting picked, and we were shocked," she said.

"[Veterans] come back from a war, and they're damaged. They're damaged financially, emotionally. There's a distance between their families, children. They've come from a high-risk area. They've come from an area where they may not sleep well at night. They don't always trust the people around them," said Paul LaVoie of the Military Warriors Support Foundation. "And to come home into their neighborhoods, their cities where they have a home that's theirs -- that's the safest place in the world they can be."

As a part of the program, the Military Warriors Support Foundation holds the title for the house for three years to make sure a family can maintain expenses.

The Greens had been living in Georgia. Both were were stationed at Fort Stewart. Given the option of where to live, they selected North Texas because Natasha Green has family in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The Greens were still taking it all in Friday morning, going from empty room to empty room, picturing what their house will be like once it is filled with their belongings.

Tobias and Natasha Green will be joined by their two children and niece in the four-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom, 2,720-square-foot house.

"I'm still just amazed," Natasha Green said. "I'm like, 'Wow this is ours. Our family is going to be raised here."

"We can't wait to make this our home," she said.

Report: DISD Communications Chief to Leave

A DISD official whose $185,000 salary has drawn criticism is expected to resign, the Dallas Morning News reports.

A member of the Dallas school district superintendent's cabinet whose salary drew criticism when she was hired is expected to resign, according to a newspaper report.

Superintendent Mike Miles brought Jennifer Sprague with him from Colorado Springs when he started at the Dallas Independent School District in the summer. Her salary of $185,000 is about $100,000 more than she made in her previous job, where she served as head of communications for Miles in Colorado.

The Dallas Morning News reported Friday night that Sprague plans to resign, possibly next week. The newspaper said that district officials were preparing to announce her resignation next week.

Sprague's salary was hard for critics to swallow at a time when the school district was closing schools and cutting jobs. But Miles defended Sprague's salary and those of three other cabinet members, saying they face high expectations.

"We have to have a first-rate cabinet of national quality if we're going to be the premiere urban school district in America," Miles said in June. "The salary range is not inordinate."

Some local actors say they are upset because they have not been paid for their work on a movie shot in North Texas.

"One Heart," which is based on a high school football game that was the subject of Matt Barrie and Noah Bullard's award-winning NBC 5 story "Game of Hope," was shot this year.

The movie is about the One Heart Bowl, which sees Grapevine Christian square off against the Gainesville State School. The Gainesville State School is a lockup for children who have committed serious crimes.

The casting calls for the movie went out earlier this year, and some parts of the movie were shot in Grapevine and Denton County in October.

In late November, NBC 5 started receiving calls and emails saying that some people on the set were not getting paid.

Jason Grindle, one of the extras in the movie, noticed after a month that he hadn't received a check.

"I thought, 'You know what? There's a little delay. It's OK. We're going to sit back and wait on that,'" he said. "And then I realized, 'Wow, this is continuing and continuing and continuing.'"

Grindle, a personal trainer by day, has done some acting for the new season of "Dallas" and was excited to be cast as an athletic trainer for one of the teams in "One Heart." He had no problem working from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. for the shoot.

He said he knew coming into the movie that his small part came with a small paycheck.

"I'm not going to the Porsche dealership on what I did," he said. "It's a pittance."

Grindle called the production company about his check but didn't hear back. He also emailed the production company. His email bounced back.

He went on Facebook and complained about the movie. That's when the production company emailed him back, but their response surprised him.

"I was told because I had made comments on social media that their attorneys will not release my payment until I sign a document releasing that payment and removing any items from social media," Grindle said.

NBC 5 reviewed the "payment acknowledgment and release agreement" and saw the "non-disparagement" clause in the legal document sent by the production company.

Grindle said he is not signing it.

NBC 5 reached out to One Heart LLC, the movie's producers. In a statement they told NBC 5:

Film Associates of OneHeart, LLC, producer of the ONE HEART movie, has continuously assured all extras that they will be paid in full. To date, the vast majority of the thousands of extras who participated have been paid. The film's extras payroll company sent checks to a number of extras earlier this week. In addition, yesterday, the company received a number of checks from the payroll company, and either held them for pick up, or mailed them to extras. The remaining extras who have not yet received payment will receive checks in the days ahead. We are grateful for the work of all extras who participated in the filming of the movie.

NBC 5 will continue to monitor the story for further developments.

Allen Police Cut Burglary Rate With New Program

advertisement

Allen police have implemented a new program designed to address property crime.

The progressive policing program is designed to address crimes such as burglaries with more urgency and hopefully catch the people responsible and recover the stolen items.

"What used to take days now takes hours," Allen police spokesman Sgt. Jon Felty said.

During the holiday season, reports could pile up. Allen normally would get up to two dozen burglary reports from homes or cars each month. But since starting the progressive policing program in late October, burglaries are on the decline.

"We've had one in the last seven weeks, and it was solved within 48 hours," Felty said.

The victim in that case, Janna Crumbs, said her expectations were not very high when she called police to report that several pieces of lawn equipment had been stolen from her backyard shed.

"Usually when things like that are stolen, you do not see them again," she said.

But two officers responded to the call and, within minutes, two more joined them.

Her lawn equipment was found in neighboring McKinney. Crumb said the arrest went well beyond her expectations.

"Normally in those instances, even on a house burglary or car vandalism, you usually don't catch the people, so I'm amazed," she said. "It was a really good thing that they did."

Previously, a single officer would take a report for property crimes. The paperwork would be returned to the department, a supervisor would review it, and then the case would be assigned to a detective. All of that could take up to three days.

Property cases now are treated no differently than crimes against people. A minimum of four officers work as an investigative team, including a K-9 unit, to quickly push property cases forward quickly.

"You've got people while the investigation is going on on the street, warrants are being prepared, affidavits are being prepared," Felty said. "We've just made the process faster."

Allen police say each property crime is treated as if it's part of a series of offenses because criminals will return to the area again and again if communities experience one successful burglary.

Police have arrested 13 burglary and robbery suspects, all repeat offenders.

Tennis Official's DNA Not on Coffee Mug: Lawyer

A preliminary DNA test did not find Lois Goodman's fingerprints on the coffee mug she's accused of using to bludgeon her husband to death inside their Woodland Hills home, the 70-year-old tennis referee's lawyer announced Thursday. Janet Kwak reports for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Nov. 8, 2012.

Murder Charge Dropped Against Tennis Umpire

Prosecutors dropped charges against Lois Goodman, who was accused of killing her husband, Alan Goodman, with a coffee cup in their Woodland Hills home in April 2012. Gordon Tokumatsu reports for the NBC4 News at Noon on Nov. 30, 2012.

The 70-year-old woman who was arrested -- then cleared -- in her husband's death said on Friday that she can't wait to resume her previous life as an umpire with the United States Tennis Association.

Lois Goodman reacted to the news that the USTA, of which she has officiated some of the greatest players in her more than 35 years in the job, was reinstating her in 2013.

"It's a great holiday gift," said Goodman as she stood alongside her attorney, Robert Sheahen, in Sherman Oaks on Friday. "I'm thankful.

"I get my old life back. I appreciate my life so much more now seeing what I went through."

Goodman drew national headlines when she was arrested in the death of her husband, Alan, in August during the U.S. Open in New York where she was set to begin officiating. Authorities accused her of using a coffee mug to bludgeon her husband to death in their San Fernando Valley home. Upon her arrest, she was suspended from her job.

Alan Goodman's bloodied body was found in the couple's Woodland Hills home on April 17. Officers initially ruled the death suspicious because they couldn't determine if foul play was involved, according to an LAPD press release.

But after launching a full homicide investigation and working closely with the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, detectives said on Aug. 2 that the case was a homicide and named Lois Goodman the prime suspect, the LAPD said.

On Nov. 30, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office dropped charges, saying they had received additional information and were unable to proceed because of insufficient evidence.

The announcement came after Goodman's attorneys said that her DNA was not found on the coffee mug and that she had passed a lie detector test.

Shortly after the charges were dropped, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck announced that detectives would continue to investigate the case.

On Friday, Goodman said she didn't know she had the strength to withstand being arrested, and temporarily housed at Riker's Island, before being charged with killing her husband who she was married to for over 50 years.

"I knew one day that I'd be cleared," she said.

When asked by a reporter what she'd tell her husband if he were alive, she said, "He knew I loved him very much.

"He'd be very proud to know that everything turned out all right."

Funerals, And A Moment Of Silence In Newtown

More funerals were held today for children and teachers killed in the Sandy Hook School Shooting. There was also a moment of silence observed. Tracie Strahan reports

NRA Calls for Armed Police Officer in Every School, Blames Culture of Violence for Shootings

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," says Wayne LaPierre, NRA's executive vice president. News 4's Marc Santia reports.

The last of the funerals for the 26 victims of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. are being held Saturday, ending a week long procession of funerals as the final three young victims are laid to rest.

On Friday morning, exactly one week after a gunman burst into Sandy Hook Elementary and killed 20 first-graders and six educators, the nation paused for a moment of silence and tolled bells 26 times for the victims.

Josephine Gay's funeral mass is being held at Saint Rose of Lima Saturday morning. The first grader had just turned 7 the week of the shooting. On Monday, purple balloons — Josephine's favorite color — sprouted from the family mailbox and those of all her neighbors.

"'Joey' is a beautiful little girl, may she never be forgotten and live forever in our hearts," wrote Polly Larsen, a family friend, on Facebook.

Six-year-old Ana Marquez-Greene had just moved to Newtown two months ago, in part, because of Sandy Hooks's pristine reputation, her grandmother, Elba Marquez said. Ana's funeral is being held Saturday morning at First Cathedral in Bloomfield, Conn.

Ana's father, Jimmy Greene, wrote on Facebook, "As much as she's needed here and missed by her mother, brother and me, Ana beat us all to paradise."

Emilie Parker, 6, loved to make people smile and never missed a chance to draw a picture or make a card. Her father, Robbie Parker, said she loved to try new things, except for food.

In a press conference, Parker said he held no animosity for the gunman, even as he struggled to explain the death to his other two children, ages 3 and 4. He was sustained, he said, by the fact that the world is better for having had Emilie in it.

"I'm so blessed to be her dad," Parker said.

Emilie is being laid to rest in Ogden, Utah, where her family lived before moving to Newtown. On Friday night her family held a memorial service in Ogden and released 26 lanterns. Emilie's dad released the final lantern, a pink one, his daughter's favorite color.

Coppell firefighters and HAZMAT teams were called to the 1400-block of S. Belt Line Road Friday afternoon after several people became ill.

According to Coppell Deputy Fire Chief Eric Greaser, seven people were hospitalized after they became nauseus and began vomiting after smelling methanol.

According to Sharon Logan, with the city of Coppell, several people at Hyundai Motor America were exposed after a barrel was punctured.

Methanol, or methyl alcohol, is a widely used solvent and fuel that can irritate eyes, skin and the respiratory system while causing headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting.  Exposure can, in severe cases, cause blindness, according to the United States Department of Labor.

The Salvation Army spent Friday preparing to distribute Angel Tree gifts.

Dozens of volunteers sorted through tens of thousands of gifts donated through the program to make sure that 58,000 children and seniors across the Metroplex will wake up with a present under the tree Christmas morning.

In the warehouses, storing the gifts there are thousands of boxes that each represent a family.

Karen Bilbrey, who is coordinating the massive operation in Fort Worth, expects 60 families every 20 minutes to pick up gifts Saturday.

Many of them are experiencing hardships in life.

"They never expected to have to do this, so these are the ones that you really feel for," Bilbrey said.

One volunteer, Vicki Stanley, says that after seven years of working with the Angel Tree project -- delegation is the key to getting it all done.

"You have one section, one piece, one job," Stanley said. "You do your portion, and then everybody helps the job gets done."

A job which, at the end of day, means happy children on Christmas morning.

While so many were so generous, not everyone who decided to participate in the program has followed through.

Participants can still take their Angel Tree's unwrapped gifts to one of two Salvation Army Christmas centers.

The Dallas center is located at 9216 Harry Hines Blvd., and the Fort Worth center is at 229 East Felix St.

No Regular Emergency Drills at Some Schools

advertisement

Most Texas schools regularly hold emergency drills as required by law to prepare for events such as shootings, but some districts do not.

Gov. Rick Perry offered his condolences to the victims of Friday's mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school and called for all Texas school districts to review their emergency plans.

The Legislature passed a law in 2005 that mandates that schools develop security plans and regularly practice them so that students and teachers know what to do.

"When something does happen, you hope that you've practiced it enough so that that response becomes automatic," said Fort Worth Independent School District spokesman Clint Bond.

Under the state law, schools are supposed to hold regular evacuation drills in the hallways and classrooms and conduct lockdown drills to teach students and teachers what to do if they become trapped.

"You lock the doors on the inside. You turn off the lights. You get the children away from the windows. You get them out of sight if you look in the door," Bond said.

The Texas School Safety Center surveys school districts to find out how often they rehearse their plans.

Its most recent study found that 124 of the 987 surveyed Texas districts reported that none of their schools conducted lockdown drills once per semester as recommended. Another 89 districts reported that only some of their schools held lockdown drills.

And 93 districts said none of their schools held monthly evacuation drills as recommended.

Large districts such as Fort Worth and Dallas say they conduct the drills at the recommended intervals.

"We drill for this once a month in our schools," Bond said.

The Texas School Safety Center survey found that smaller districts are sometimes less likely to complete the requirements.

The center would not name individual districts out of concern for revealing security weaknesses at specific schools.

Texas schools are also supposed to conduct a security audit once every three years. Forty districts reported that none of their facilities completed such audits. Another 10 said only some of their facilities completed the audits.

State law does not require that the people who conduct the security audits to have any kind of certification.

Districts are asked to use competent personnel, and they're given checklists of guidelines, but there currently is no certification program or designation for people conducting the audits.

The Dallas school district's police chief pointed out Friday that it's impossible to prepare for everything.

"We can do prevention," Chief Craig Miller said. "We can instruct prevention. We can have plans, but those plans can always be thwarted."

Even though Texas is thousands of miles away from the tragedy in Connecticut, North Texans still feel the pain.

Dozens of parents, teachers and students attended a candlelight vigil hosted by Liberty High School students in Frisco on Friday night.

"We wanted to make sure the families know they do have support. There is more than just evil in the world. People are good, and this is just one of those things that can come of tragedies," senior Chelsey Chandler said.

"I think that's what's important -- this needs to be a wakeup call," senior Lauren Tonkovich said. "We all need to start caring more about others and stop being so self-centered and caught up in our own time. I just think that could be a huge help in the future."

"I just could not image what these parents are going through or how you catch your next breath, so my prayers are just with those families," parent Shaw Walker said. "We just have to see the good in each other and come together as a community, as a state, as a country. Our differences don't matter when things like this happen."

Parents attending the high school 3A State Championship game at Cowboys Stadium said news of the school shooting shocked them.

Netha Elliott, who has four young children, said she hugged her youngest when she heard the news.

"Just talk to them about how important it is to tell each other you love each other every day, before school and be so thankful that we make it through life every day," she said.

Parent Laurie Lively said she cried when she heard the news.

"It's hard to know what goes through your mind," she said. "It's confusion. The most astounding thing is what goes through your stomach and your heart -- just totally heartbroken."

TxDOT Turning to High-Mast Lighting

Randy McIlwain, NBC 5 News

Residents say TxDOT's new high-mast lighting that is going up along North Texas highways and interstates is also making their neighborhoods safer.

The Texas Department of Transportation is using what is called high-mast lighting on most of its newer projects, such as the High Five and other improvements along interstates and highways.

The technology is also used by airports because the higher masts throw broader light onto a larger area, becoming the preferred technology to replace old street lighting systems.

One of the unintended consequences is that neighborhoods occasionally are exposed to the brighter lights. But so far, TxDOT says it hasn't heard any complaints.

That could be in part because neighbors in affected areas say the lights actually improve safety and deter crime.

The lights themselves also contain less copper wiring, making them less likely to become the target of thieves, a problem with older model street lights.

TxDOT says drivers can expect to see more high-mast lighting as part of roadway improvement projects.

Parent, Child Recount Connecticut School Shooting

A father and his daughter describe what unfolded during a shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

Tales of Horror from Newtown School Shooting

The brother of a student at Sandy Hook Elementary talks about his sister s ordeal during school shooting.

More Photos and Videos

The most famous thing about Newtown, Conn. -- until now -- was perhaps the 100-foot flagpole that has stood in the middle of Main Street since 1876. The pole is a source of community pride, but on Friday night it was also a symbol of sorrow, its flag hanging at half-staff in honor of the 20 children and six adults shot to death hours earlier.

That it happened in a school was the ultimate insult, residents said, because the schools are what continue to draw young families to this quiet, town in Connecticut's southwestern corner, a 90-minute drive from New York City. The schools and the sense of kinship they foster are what keep the place together, they said.

"This is a community, not just a town," said Cathy Masi, a real estate agent whose office window frames the downtown flagpole.

Masi spoke with a determination that didn't seem necessary until the shooting. Because she knows, everyone here knows, that their unpretentious suburban-rural town of 28,000 is going to be tested like never before.

"We are a very strong community," Masi said. "We are going to rally around the families. And we will get through this."

Dark was falling, it was getting cold and hardly anyone was out, other than reporters and satellite trucks. Many residents were waiting for the vigils that would be held at various houses of worship around town. Some posted simple, handwritten signs on their lawns saying they were praying for the victims.

"It's full of love, this town," John Vouros said, standing in the vestibule of his Main Street bed and breakfast, festooned with wreaths and bright ribbons and holiday lights. He paused to catch himself and his eyes got watery. "This is one of those towns where you think, 'This could never happen to us.'"

He waved his arms out at the historic downtown, lined with century-old trees and Colonial-style houses. "It's quiet here. There's no sensationalism. We all got excited when Starbucks came. And now..."

Vouros collected himself again. "Now we're on the map. How ridiculous. How awful."

But Newtown is resilient, he said. "You'll see that over the next few days."

Inside the Trinity Episcopal Church, a few people had walked in off the street to pray. James Curry, bishop suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, fought back tears as he considered the evil that had come to this town. But if Newtown has anything, it is faith, he said. And that will get them through.

"The people here know they have to come together, and they will," Curry said.

Giffords, Other Politicians React to Newtown Shooting

Tales of Horror from Newtown School Shooting

The brother of a student at Sandy Hook Elementary talks about his sister s ordeal during school shooting.

More Photos and Videos

As word spread of the 27 tragic deaths at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., politicians from across the country offered their sympathies, expressed frustration and called for reform.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was the victim of a mass shooting in January 2011, sent her prayers via her husband's Facebook page, and a tearful President Obama told the nation, "our hearts are broken."

Mark Kelly, husband of former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
"I just woke up in my hotel room in Beijing, China, to learn that another mass shooting has taken place -- this time at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in CT. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the entire community of Newtown, CT. I just spoke to Gabby, and she sends her prayers from Tucson.

"As we mourn, we must sound a call for our leaders to stand up and do what is right. This time our response must consist of more than regret, sorrow, and condolence. The children of Sandy Hook Elementary School and all victims of gun violence deserve leaders who have the courage to participate in a meaningful discussion about our gun laws -- and how they can be reformed and better enforced to prevent gun violence and death in America. This can no longer wait." (Facebook)

President Barack Obama:
"The majority of those who died today were children -- beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10-years-old," he said, pausing to wipe away a tear. "They had their entire lives ahead of them -- birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own."

"Our hearts are broken today, for the parents, grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children," Obama added, "as well as the families of the adults who were lost." (NBC News)

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg
"It has come to that. Not even kindergarteners learning their A,B,Cs are safe. We heard after Columbine that it was too soon to talk about gun laws. We heard it after Virginia Tech. After Tucson and Aurora and Oak Creek. And now we are hearing it again. For every day we wait, 34 more people are murdered with guns. Today, many of them were 5-year-olds. President Obama rightly sent his heartfelt condolences to the families in Newtown. But the country needs him to send a bill to Congress to fix this problem. Calling for 'meaningful action' is not enough. We need immediate action. We have heard all the rhetoric before. What we have not seen is leadership -- not from the White House and not from Congress. That must end today. This is a national tragedy and it demands a national response. My deepest sympathies are with the families of all those affected, and my determination to stop this madness is stronger than ever."

Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ)
"This is a day of great sadness in America, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families.  This latest shooting tragedy is an unthinkable act of violence carried out against young children and innocent people.  Americans are sick and tired of these attacks on our children and neighbors and they are sick and tired of nothing being done in Washington to stop the bloodshed.  If we do not take action to address gun violence, shooting tragedies like this will continue.  As President Obama said, we must act now 'regardless of the politics.'"

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT)

"Hadassah and I are shocked and heartbroken by the horrific events in Newtown today. We know this community and its people well. It is a beautiful town with wonderful people. As parents and grandparents, our hearts grieve for them today, and we send our prayers to each of them. I have spoken with President Obama and Vice President Biden today, both of whom share our grief and will do everything they can to console, comfort, and strengthen the survivors and the community. I will do everything in my power to assist the victims, survivors and their loved ones in the long days ahead, and extend my deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this terrible event.

"I commend the work of our local authorities and first responders for their dedication today in Newtown. I hope that all those involved are able to work together in the coming days as details become more clear, and that families in the Newtown community may have some semblance of peace during this holiday season. All of our prayers are with those in Newtown."

House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio)

"The horror of this day seems so unbearable, but we will lock arms and unite as citizens, for that is how Americans rise above unspeakable evil.  Let us all come together in God's grace to pray for the families of the victims, that they may find some comfort and peace amid such suffering.  Let us give thanks for all those who helped get people to safety, and take heart from their example.  The House of Representatives -- like every American -- stands ready to assist the people of Newtown, Connecticut."

Rep. George Miller (D-CA)

"Today, my thoughts and prayers are with the parents, families and school employees dealing with the horrific loss of life in Newtown, Connecticut. I join all Americans in grieving for this community suffering from this incomprehensible tragedy.

"Today is for sorrow and prayers. But the days ahead are for serious reflection about how we can reduce the flow of guns into the wrong hands.  One mass shooting after another in America is followed by sincere and painful mourning but no real action to protect the innocent.  We must come together as a nation to honestly discuss how to prevent people intent on carrying out these savage attacks from so easily obtaining guns and ammunition.

The nation is ready for this conversation.  More importantly, though, the safety of children and all Americans demands we have it."

Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.)
"I am in shock and disbelief at this horrible tragedy that took so many innocent lives today. As a father and grandfather, it is beyond my comprehension why anyone would want to hurt innocent children. I join the millions of Americans whose thoughts and hearts are with those suffering because of this horrible crime in Connecticut."

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY)
"Today's horrific act of violence in Newtown, Connecticut is senseless and heartbreaking.  There are no words to express the profound grief we all feel at the loss of so many, especially young children.  My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their friends and family and the entire Newtown community.

"We cannot tolerate mass shootings as a mere inconvenience or a normal part of our everyday lives.  Easy availability of the deadliest weapons to the most dangerous people has cost countless lives and caused immeasurable suffering, never more so than today.   Our expressions of sympathy must be matched with concrete actions to stop gun violence."

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Col.)
"The terrible news out of Connecticut is staggering. Like all Colorado families, my family is grieving and our hearts are with the victims, their families, and all of the students and employees at the school. This is a parent's worst nightmare. As Coloradans, we know how this type of tragedy can shake a community to its core. We are here for Connecticut as they work together to heal in the days ahead."

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.)
"This is a terrible, senseless, incomprehensible tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Newtown and Sandy Hook Elementary School.  I have been in touch with the governor's office and other officials and will do everything in my power to be there for the affected families."

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.)
"As a parent and a public official, my heart and prayers are with these innocent victims, their families, and the entire community. I share the shock of all Connecticut at this hideous, horrific crime of inhuman violence.  I will be in close communication with law enforcement and state and local officials to ensure they receive the federal support and resources they need. "

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo
"I was shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School this morning in Newtown, Connecticut. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the innocent victims -- many of whom were young children -- whose lives were claimed by this senseless and horrific act of violence. During times of such unthinkable tragedy, all New Yorkers stand together with the people of our neighboring state to grieve the loss of life and help bear the pain and anguish that will be felt by so many in the weeks, months, and years to come.

"While we don't have all the facts and our focus must be on the victims, this is yet another senseless and horrific act of violence involving guns. We as a society must unify and once and for all crack down on the guns that have cost the lives of far too many innocent Americans. Let this terrible tragedy finally be the wake-up call for aggressive action and I pledge my full support in that effort."

Sen. Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME)
"Like all Americans, I am shocked and sickened at this reprehensible, heinous act at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Such senseless violence is simply unimaginable and has no place in this great country of ours. As we struggle to comprehend this national tragedy, we stand united in holding the families and loved ones of those lost in our thoughts, and we pray for the full recovery of everyone who has been injured."

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY)
"The horror of what happened is beyond words and leaves a permanent lump in your throat.  To senselessly lose so many innocent lives breaks your heart. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who lost a loved one today, to all who are injured, and to those that survived. The people of New York will help in any way we can as our fellow citizens struggle to comprehend today's events.  Perhaps an awful tragedy like this will bring us together so we can do what it takes to prevent this horror from being repeated again."

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)
"My heart breaks for the victims and families impacted by the senseless act of violence today in Newtown, Connecticut. In a world that can at times be defined by its darkness, children are a reminder of what is good, cheerful and beautiful about life. An act of violence against these defenseless young people, as well as the faculty and staff who dedicate themselves daily to educating and caring for them, is a deed of unconscionable evil. I pray that God holds Newtown close tonight as all of her residents come to terms with this tragedy."

Shooter "Forced His Way" Into School

Connecticut authorities have identified the 20 children and six adults killed in Friday's rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and said it appeared the gunman "forced his way" into the Newtown school.

The medical examiner continues to have work to do and will provide victims' names and birthdays later, state police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance added at a Saturday morning press conference.

One of those victims is school principal Dawn Hochsprung, 47, NBC News has confirmed. She was married and had five children of her own.

School psychologist Mary Sherlach was also killed. Sherlach is survived by her husband of 31 years, Bill, and her 25- and 28-year-old daughters.

All victims' bodies were removed from the elementary school overnight, NBC News reported.

Hours earlier, hundreds of mourners gathered in Newtown —a town of 28,000 people 60 miles north of New York City— Friday night to remember the students and teachers lost in the tragedy. So many people had shown up for a vigil at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church that dozens, unable to get in, watched the service through open windows and doorways.

"I think about these children … and I know we have 20 new saints, 20 new angels," Monsignor Robert Weiss told the standing-room-only crowd. "But that doesn't take away the pain. It doesn't take away the hurt. But it does bring us closer together."

Earlier in the morning, 20-year-old Adam Lanza (pictured below) had stormed into Sandy Hook Elementary School and opened fire. Newtown Police Lt. George Sinko said on NBC's "Today" show it appeared Lanza shot his way into the school by shattering glass by the front door.

By the time his shooting rampage had ended, 20 small children and six adults had been killed. He, too, was found dead at the scene. A woman believed to be his mother, Nancy Lanza, was also found shot dead in a Newtown home. Despite earlier reports, it did not appear she was a staff member at Sandy Hook Elementary. Newtown superintendent Dr. Janet Robinson told told NBC Connecticut that there was no record of Nancy Lanza in their database. She may have been a substitute teacher, but it was unclear.

Investigators spent hours questioning Lanza's 24-year-old brother Ryan, who told them that Adam had a history of mental health issues and that they had not spoken in two years, NBC News reported.

It was the second-deadliest school shooting in American history, second only to the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting that killed 32.

President Obama, addressing the nation for the second time, said Satuday that in his weekly radio and Internet address that "every parent in America has a heart heavy with hurt."

On Friday, Obama teared up as he talked about the young victims.

"The majority of those who died today were children. Beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old," he said at a news conference. "They had their entire lives ahead of them. Birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own.

"So our hearts are broken for them today."

Two 9mm handguns recovered at scene—a Glock and a Sig Sauer—were legally purchased and registered to the shooter's mother, Nancy Lanza.

"We have a mountain of evidence, both physical and forensic," Lt. Sinko said on "Today." "Obviously we're not going to leave any stone unturned."

Students and parents described a scene of terror when the shots rang out early Friday morning. Witnesses said the attack occurred during morning announcements.

The brother of one student said his sister had heard screams coming over the intercom.

"When they were leaving the room … (state police) were telling the students to hold hands and close their eyes until they were outside," he said.

Back at the vigil, mourners wrote messages on three easels erected at the entrance to the church.

"May God look after and take care of your little angels," one wrote. "We are so so sorry for your loss. God bless your families. His strength will guide you."

Another wrote: "Sleep in heavenly peace."

Becky Mantone, who drove three of her daughters from nearby Fairfield to the vigil, said she didn't know anyone directly impacted by the attack, but felt compelled to take part so they could provide some small bit of comfort to their neighbors.

"We wanted to give our support to this town," Mantone said while she and her daughters stood in a circle, cradling lit candles outside the church. "I hope people would help our town if God forbid something happened to us."

As the investigation continues, officers have been assigned to the parents so the information is communicated directly to them, according to state police.

Major crime detectives are still working the scene and their investigation won't be completed for another day and a half to two days, Lt. Vance said Saturday.

"It's going to be a long, painstaking process," he said.

Authorities have appealed for privacy to families of the victims.

White Settlement police say a man suspected of burglarizing an antique store escaped the back of a police cruiser and stole it.

Police said they caught 41-year-old Darren Douglas Porter burglarizing the shop in the 800 block of South Cherry Lane at about 7:20 a.m. Friday.

Officers detained Porter and cuffed him. They placed him in the back of the police car, shut the door and stepped away to talk to the store owner.

But Porter somehow got his cuffed hands in front of him and rolled down the window -- even though the back windows are not supposed to roll down.

"Unknown to us the back windows were still active so the suspect was able to hit the back window release to roll down the window and reach around and unlock the door from the outside," Lt. J.P. Bevering said. "We believe they came from the dealership with those disconnected, but they were not."

Police said Porter tiptoed to the driver's seat, got in and took off. White Settlement police received two 911 calls about a police car that was driving erratically.

He abandoned the police car at an apartment complex off Shenandoah Road and Calmont Avenue in West Fort Worth.

Police said their chances of finding Porter are "very good."

"We know who he is. We've dealt with him previously," Bevering said. "We know his associates, so now we're in the process of contacting them and keeping an eye out for him."

Porter will face additional charges of felony theft and escape in addition to charges related to the burglary.

Bevering said the police department would check its nine other patrol cars to make sure the windows can't be rolled down. It had never happened before, he said.

Dallas police say at least two men stole eight puppies from a Petland store.

The burglary, which was caught on surveillance camera, comes just two months after similar break-ins at Petland stores in Plano and Frisco.

"This was a smash and grab -- it only took a couple minutes," said sales manager Nick Chambers. "These guys, they know what they're doing."

A Yorkshire Terrier, a Bichon, two Shih Tzus, two designer mixed-breed dogs and two Boston Terriers are among the stolen dogs.

A police report values the puppies at about $12,000. The store's employees say they're more concerned for the animals' welfare.

"We want them to be safe," Chambers said. "Here at the store we have the facilities and the proper things they need. I don't know what these guys have in mind for the puppies."

The dogs are microchipped.

"These are like our babies," Chambers said. "We take very good care and actually love these dogs."

Catching the thieves while they are still in possession of the dogs could be critical to making an arrest, police said.

An arrest was made in the Plano case, but police are still trying to track down everyone who was involved. Police said it is too early to say if the Dallas burglary is connected to the Plano and Frisco thefts.

Police recommend that anyone who bought a puppy on Friday get it scanned to determine if it is one of the stolen puppies.
