Funeral services were held Friday afternoon for a Dallas police officer who was killed in a car crash in South Texas during the holiday weekend.

Hundreds of family, friends and colleagues remembered 54-year-old Senior Cpl. Recardo "Ricky" Trejo during the service at the Divine Mercy Our Lord Catholic Church in Mesquite.

Trejo, who was with the Dallas Police Department for more than three decades, left behind a legacy of service and dedication.

"He's in my heart, he will always be in my heart; a very special man to many many people," said his cousin, Rosa Garza.

Trejo was killed in a head-on collision near San Antonio while he was heading back home to North Texas after spending Thanksgiving with family.

"He just walked in the room and lit up a room," Garza said. "He had a smile that just brightened up a room, didn't have a lot of negative things to say. He was very special."

Trejo was a 36-year veteran of the department who was assigned to the Southeast Division and was a school liaison officer at Woodrow Wilson High School.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown said Trejo got his start at the department as a cadet. He called Trejo "one of the most dedicated officers to this profession, to this job, to this city.

"He has a family that is very very deeply hurt behind this loss, tragically," he said.

Trejo is survived by two daughters.

The city of Dallas wants a mulligan on an old South Dallas landfill.

Mayor Mike Rawlings officially announced at a press conference Friday morning a plan to turn a 400-acre plot of land off of Loop 12 into a state-of-the-art golf facility.

City Manager Mary Suhm said the project could cost as much as $60 million. The City Council still has to vote to approve a maximum of $12 million to clean up and build infrastructure on the land.

Councilman Dwaine Caraway said he considers the project an investment in South Dallas -- and a way for the city to bring big sporting events to the city instead of the suburbs.

"Remember, we lost the Cowboys, but that was a different City Council, and we will not lose anything that we compete for," he said. "We're going to roll up our sleeves and do one heck of a job to make sure that we bring all of the prizes to our city."

Rawlings was surrounded by AT&T executive Ron Spears and Southern Methodist University President Gerald Turner when he made the announcement.

AT&T has pledged $2.5 million to the project, which includes an 18-hole championship course, a nine-hole short course, a training facility and walking trails.

SMU would use the facility as its practice course for their student athletes.

Dallas native Lee Trevino, a World Golf Hall of Famer, said the project could be huge for the city. The facility could be the Cowboys Stadium of PGA golf, he said.

"Jerry Jones did it just up the street, you know," he said. "We could have had it right here. I could see it right here, if we put it over here. Everybody talks about it. When you talk about football stadiums, they say, 'Oh, you should see that Dallas stadium. It's unbelievable.' That's what we want to do here."

The council will vote on early stages of funding for the project soon.

Fighting to Keep the Byron Nelson Golf Tournament in Irving

With a big announcement in Dallas about a brand new Golf Course, the city of Irving is fighting to keep the Byron Nelson golf tournament in the city.

Speculation that the Byron Nelson Championship could eventually move to Dallas are swirling, but organizers said it's too soon to think that far ahead.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings expressed a desire to bring the golf tournament to Dallas during the announcement of the Trinity Forest project in South Dallas, which is expected to include a world-class golf course,

The Byron Nelson Championship has been in Irving since 1983. A contractual agreement keeps tournament in Las Colinas through the year 2018.

"We have for a long time now put on a very successful, top-of-class event that attracts a lot of people and raises a lot of money," said Charley Spradley, president of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas."[There are] no plans to change that at all for right now and in the years to come."

As the Las Colinas area continues to develop, Irving's convention and visitors bureau is doing everything it can to try to keep the tournament in the city even longer.

"We did an economic impact study back in 2000 [that] put the value of the tournament to the regional economy at about $40 million," said Maura Gast, convention and visitors bureau executive director.

The event attracts up to 250,000 people, she said.

"2018 has been on everybody's radar in Irving for a long time, and we will work very, very closely with the Salesmanship Club and the Four Seasons to figure out what we need to do to keep the tournament here," Gast said.

Spradley said that while he's openly supporting the new Dallas facility, the Salesmanship Club of Dallas has no functional role in building the project.

"We think this is good for the city of Dallas," he said. "But again, we're putting on our tournament in Irving, and we are excited about that, and we have great plans for 2013, 2014 and the years behind."

The Salesmanship Club of Dallas also announced that AT&T will replace Hewlett-Packard as the tournament's title sponsor beginning in 2015.

Snowball Express Arrives in North Texas

It is a gathering unlike any other across the country, and it only happens in North Texas.

Throughout the day on Friday, more than 1,700 children and military spouses arrived at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport as part of the seventh annual Snowball Express, a event for the families of fallen service members.

American Airlines brought in nine charter planes full of families. Others arrived on regular flights, some flying from as far away as Guam, Puerto Rico and Germany.

The loads of planes were greeted with thunderous applause and cheers from dozens of volunteers, American employees, Patriot Guard Riders, military members and even regular travelers.

"It's the least we can do for these kids, for these families who have given so much," said Capt. Jim Palmershem, an American pilot who flew the first flight of the day from Nashville and Arkansas.

The Strattons arrived on a charter from Indianapolis and Washington, D.C. The family of three children and mother, Jennifer, from Stafford, Va., are attending their third Snowball Express.

"The first event we went to, my daughter, Delaney, looked around at all the people and she said, 'They haven't forgotten daddy.'" Jennifer Stratton said. "And I said, 'No they haven't.'  This is one of those weekends where it's America at its best. We just love coming to Texas and that Texans remember our fallen heroes."

The Snowball Express isn't just a warm greeting at DFW Airport. The five-day event includes for the first time a day of activities in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

"We do a thing called the 'Walk of Gratitude,' said Dan Ronan, a member of the board of directors of the Dallas-based charity Snowball Express. "And this is a chance for the community to come out and to try and show people how much they appreciate the service and sacrifice these families have made."

"On Sunday morning, about 10:30, we'll kick off with about 2,000 folks that we can cheer on and let them know how much we appreciate them," Palmershem said.

The Syversons from Carlisle, Penn., have attended every Snowball Express after Army Maj. Paul Syverson was killed by a mortar in Balad, Iraq, in 2004. His daughter Amy, who was just 2 months old at the time, said she enjoyed coming to North Texas for the events.

"It's really great to be here with everyone's support," she said. "It's really nice."

Her mother, Jackie, echoed the sentiment.

"It's a cool honor, because holidays are hard in their own way," she said. "And then when the kids get to come here and do something really cool like this and be around other kids who are like them, it works out great. It's just a really cool way to start the holidays, it means a lot to us."

It also means a lot to the volunteers, who spend hours coordinating the massive five-day operation.

Bridget Johnson, an American operations agent, helped decorate a part of Terminal C for the arriving planes. A former military member herself, Johnson said she can't think of a better way to honor the families.

"We didn't pay the ultimate sacrifice, and these families did," she said. "It means a lot for us to be able to give back."

"It's about creating some happy times around Christmas time," Palmershem said. "I'm not sure who gets more out of it, the kids or the volunteers. But we're just so glad to be here and be a part of this and looking forward to a great weekend here in Dallas-Fort Worth."

Jennifer Stratton said she knows her husband would be happy to hear that his family gets a holiday treat away from home and a chance to remember the families that have lost a loved one in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

"He would be happy to know that America doesn't forget their heroes," she said.

The Walk of Gratitude will begin at 10:30 on Sunday along East Exchange Avenue in the Stockyards. The public is encouraged to line North Main Street for the walk. Click here for more information.

Second-Graders Charged for Bathroom Breaks

advertisement

The mother of a 7-year-old Irving elementary school student says her son wet his pants in class after his teacher refused to let him use the restroom Thursday afternoon.

"I was absolutely appalled," Sonja Cross said. "I could not believe it."

The first-year teacher at J.O. Davis Elementary awards her students with "Boyd Bucks" for good behavior. Going to the bathroom outside of the three scheduled breaks costs two Boyd Bucks per trip.

Cross' son, an honor roll student, needed to go to the bathroom, but he sat back down because he didn't have any Boyd Bucks, his mother said.

"He tried to hold it as much as he could, but he just couldn't," Cross said. "He came home from school, and he was crying and really upset."

"Really, that's just unhealthy," Cross said. "I think that she had no concern for the children."

Cross complained to the teacher, but didn't like the response.

"Originally when I first spoke with the teacher, she was just going to show my son special treatment, but then I said, 'That's just not good enough. I need for you to stop this for all the children,'" she said.

Cross informed school administrators, who quickly told the teacher to stop charging her students to go to the bathroom.

"It's not a bad idea to have a reward program in the class -- and they're going to continue that, but not for the bathroom breaks," Irving school district spokesman Billy Rudolph said.

But Cross said her son still has to face his classmates.

"The kids are teasing him and whatnot, and it's just over for him," she said. "This is something he's going to have to deal with for quite some time."

School administrators do not plan any disciplinary action. Cross said she may push for the teacher to be suspended.

A Dallas woman who was just one number away from winning the huge Powerball jackpot earlier this week still won $1 million, the Texas Lottery Commission said Friday.

Betty S. Galloway bought her ticket at the 7-Eleven near Inwood Road and Lovers Lane, officials announced.

Her lucky ticket matched all five numbers (5–16–22–23–29), but not the Poweball number from Wednesday's $587 million drawing.

NBC 5 was unable to locate Galloway, but a manager at the 7-Eleven said she is a regular customer who lives in the neighborhood.

Three other Texans also won $1 million. The lottery commission said those tickets were purchased in Houston, Humble and San Antonio.

Powerball sales in Texas totaled $75 million, the commission said, with the city of Dallas accounting for more than $3.5 million of the sales.

Reaction After Shots Fired at Dallas High Rise

At least one window possibly two were shot out at the CBS building in Dallas on Friday afternoon.

Dallas attorney Pete Schulte talks about the window of his office being shot out.

Police are investigating a shooting at the CBS Radio building in Dallas.

Dallas police spokesman Warren Mitchell said a 911 call about two shots reportedly fired around the area of 4131 North Central Expressway was made at 3:08 p.m. Friday.

No one was hurt

The 12-story building holds offices for multiple businesses, as well as facilities for local CBS Radio stations.

One shot hit a window in the office of Pete Schulte, an attorney who works on the sixth floor of the building.

"All of a sudden, I heard a humongous boom and, within a split second, the glass shattered in my office," he said

Schulte said he believes the double-pane glass stopped the bullet from entering his office.

Schulte, a former police officer, said he believes the shots came from a rifle fired on North Central Expressway or the frontage road.

"I was a police officer, and that's what concerns me," he said. "I am very much hoping it was random -- someone off the highway or service road -- but I guess you never know."

By late Friday afternoon, crews were already at work replacing the shattered glass.

Schulte said it may take some time for his shattered nerves to recover.

"It brings back my memories from when I was a police officer, when I was shot at," he said. "I'm a little on edge."

Schulte was critical of the Dallas Police Department's response time. It took police officers more than an hour and a half to respond after the 911 call was made. The situation was filed as a criminal mischief/vandalism, so it was not given high priority.

A horse-drawn carriage led Hector "Macho" Camacho's body through the streets of East Harlem Friday as hundreds gathered to mourn the late boxer.

Camacho was shot in Puerto Rico on Nov. 21 while sitting in a parked car, and was taken off life support four days later. He was born in Puerto Rico but was raised in East Harlem, and is considered a "Son of Spanish Harlem."

He was mourned at a two-day viewing ceremony in Puerto Rico, but his mother made the case to lay her son to rest in New York, where he was raised. After seeing the turnout outside St. Cecilia's Church on East 106th Street, Maria Matias told NBC 4 New York she was happy with the decision.

"He would be proud of all you people," Matias said.

Camacho was known for his skill and style in the ring, and fought some of the biggest stars in boxing, including Oscar De La Hoya and Sugar Ray Leonard. Those who gathered Friday honored him with Puerto Rican flags and boxing memorabilia.

"God bless him," said Ramonita Gonzalez of Harlem. "I pray every day for Camacho."

Christian Camacho was stunned at the number of fans paying their respects to his father.

"I thought we were in this alone," he said. "We were crying our hearts out as a family but to see that we have all of these supporters here supporting us -- it's amazing."

Amid the pride expressed for the late boxer, there was also plenty of sorrow. Police in Puerto Rico have yet to arrest anyone for fatally shooting Camacho.

And the days after his death have been filled with drama. Fights reportedly broke out between two women claiming to be his girlfriend during a public viewing in Puerto Rico.

Supporters in the city that raised Camacho, though, only wanted to say goodbye. And his family was appreciative of that.

"I love New York," his mother said. "I love all you people."
